Case Study – Bespoke Webinar for ISACA

Avoiding Overload: Managing Stress and Burnout in Cyber Security

Background

I have known Mike Hughes, the Chairperson of the UK Chapter of ISACA for a number of years and have already done two bespoke webinars for ISACA talking about mental health in cyber security. Mike approached me in January 2023 to ask if I would deliver another webinar for ISACA taking
about how to manage stress and burnout and avoid overload.

I have regular catch up calls with Mike as I try to support ISACA and their activities as often as I can, and Mike has been very supportive to me and the work I do in the cyber security industry. We booked in call to agree a date and time for the webinar, and to go through how the webinar would look.

During the call we decided on the topics areas that the webinar would cover, and I established that there would be time for a Q&A at the end of it.

Webinar Preparation

I mapped out how the webinar would look and did some research into the latest stats around mental health, burnout and cyber security. I found that CIISEC had released a research report into this important area, and I included some of the stats from the report in my webinar.

I prepared a bespoke PowerPoint deck and included some hints and tips about how employers can support their staff with their mental health, and some hints and tips that can help to manage stress and avoid burnout. This is a subject area that is very close to my heart, and I was able to provide some things that help me with the disclaimer that everyone is different and it is important to find things that work for the individual when it comes to managing stress and burnout.

The Webinar Itself

The webinar opened with Mike Hughes giving attendees an update on ISACA’s work and activities, and he also talked about the research projects they are currently undertaking and their next conference event. He then handed over to me and my talk was very well received with lots of good engagement, feedback and questions at the end.

Burnout is something that can happen to anyone, and I am always happy to raise as much awareness
of this as possible to help others.
