Deskflix Talk: Hybrid & Multi-Cloud
Background
In January 2022 I was approached by one of the agencies I am represented by for speaking engagements, Riva Media, to ask if I would be interested in being a speaker for Computing Magazine’s event Deskflix 2023: Hybrid and Multi Cloud season 1. I was already aware of the Deskflix series of events so I said a definite yes to this, and my agent Harry Gibson set up a call with me and Elizabeth Burgess who is one of the event organisers so I could understand more about the event and their requirements.
During the introductory call Elizabeth ran through the various themes that they were looking at for the event, and asked if I would do the keynote slot at 10.15am on Wednesday 22 February 2023. I agreed and we also settled on the theme of greater collaboration in cloud security to help combat the growing security threats in the cloud.
There are lots of myths that the cloud has greater security, but this is not the case. Cyber attacks and data breaches are often targeted at cloud based networks, so I suggested that the talk covered cloud security myths, some common cloud security threats, recent cloud cyber attacks and data breaches (to include Intercontinental Hotels, Accenture and the Medibank data breach), then move on to talking about how collaboration could potential help when it comes to combatting some of these threats. Elizabeth was very happy with this approach.
Event Preparation
To prepare for the event I started off by undertaking some research about the Deskflix events series and the topic we agreed I would talk about. I looked into the various myths around cloud security, what the most recent cyber attacks and data breaches were and what the most common cloud security threats are.
I developed a bespoke slide deck and created a briefing document for myself which listed everything I needed to know about the event, the host Penny Horwood (Associate Editor at Computing Magazine) and the technical aspects of the event and the event platform. As the event was to be a virtual one, I booked in a pre-event technical call to test the platform and ensured everything worked as it should.
The Event Itself
My keynote talk for the event went smoothly with no technical glitches or problems, and the platform they used for the event was easy to navigate and integrated well with Zoom.
I enjoyed talking about cloud security and how greater collaboration could help when it comes to greater security for the cloud, and the audience was very engaged and asked some questions at the end of my talk including ones around whether the government is doing enough around cloud security and with so many different organisations working in the cyber security space in the UK, how do you know which ones to go to for what.
Post-Event Feedback
“Lisa’s talk was exactly what the organisers of Deskflix 2023 were looking for and they were very happy with it. It was an integral part of the event and, the audience enjoyed the content and were fully engaged with lots of interactive Q&A’s at the end. Our client was so delighted with Lisa’s talk they have asked to re-book her for other events they are hosting later this year.”
